Vacuum seal bags...my new love

Let me tell you one thing that I discovered this week that has changed my life. Well maybe not changed my life...but pretty close.

As I've been purging tons of stuff in our house and organizing room by room until I reach my goal of 10 garbage bags full of stuff (I'm already at 8!), I realized that we really needed to figure out how we were going to find the space to continue to store baby clothes. We don't want to get rid of Mya's girl clothes since we might (hopefully) continue to expand our family in the future...but with a boy on the way and inevitably more boy clothes now to be stored, the bins that we were using were taking up way too much space. So I discovered that Dollarama sells vacuum seal bags (for only $1.25 each!). We bought the Large ones and it turned out that approximately one bin fit into one bag. I can't tell you how excited I was about this.

This is what our wall of bins looked like BEFORE in our storage room...(bins right to the ceiling with no space for boy clothes to come).

This is what it looks like now...leaving only Terry's hockey cards and DVDs in bins (which obviously can't be vacuum sealed). Look at all that space now--ready to be filled up now with cute little boy clothes.

Jen and I bought out literally every bag at the Dollarama by our house and we spent the morning doing all of Oliver's clothes at Jen's house, then we came over to my house in the afternoon and did all of Mya's clothes. We used sticky notes to write the sizes (6-12 months, etc.) and used packing tape to tape them on the top of each bag.

With a few play breaks, swing breaks and snack breaks in between,  Mya took on the job of squishing the bags as the vacuum sucked all of the air out, and Oliver just had fun crawling all over the mess of bags and clothes around us.

I'd say it was quite a productive day.

With two more garbage bags to fill in order to fulfil my goal of purging and organizing our house, I'm almost at my goal of clearing out our space and creating a more peaceful, uncluttered, calm environment for all of us to live in.

Let me know how you're doing...has anyone else had any success in de-cluttering their house? What have you found works well? Tell me about it--I love to hear what others are doing so I can be inspired and steal your ideas!

  2. I wanna buy this vacuum sealer http://www.sorbentsystems.com/sinbosealer.html and I like it a lot. I think it is very economical- good price, and it uses ordinary bags! You don't have to buy special ones! I save all the mylar packaging from food items- it's amazing how it adds up and it's perfectly reusable. I just open it carefully, or sometimes snip some off the top if it got messed up, and go to town.

  4. I agree on the Hopunion 1 oz bags. I'll spend a bit more most of the time to get them in the 1 oz packages so that I'm not having to reseal a bag full of hops that I just exposed to oxygen. I have bought from Nikobrew and Farmhouse as well and while I have had good experiences with both companies I'm not big on Nikobrew's packaging. It seems to just be Best Vacuum Sealer bags and I've had some arrive with a broken seal. I have had good results with Farmhouse's packaging

  6. There are actually a lot of people that still wonder what the vacuum sealer bags are and what is their exact purpose. A large number of them will think that vacuum sealing is something that only major food packaging and production companies use in order to fit their items on the store shelves. Thanks to the modern times in which we live, the vacuums sealing methods can be used by ordinary people in order to properly store and preserve their food. Even though this technology is not exactly new, a lot of people still don't know about it and how to properly use it. Please contact with us to know more......................................
